Pinewood Derby
The Pinewood Derby is a quintessential Cub Scout event. Every year, Cub Scouts around the country take a small kit with a block of pine, nails and four plastic wheels and,
with their Akela, create a car using their imagination and determination! The scouts then gather these cars together and send them hurtling down a wooden or metal track at top speed!
This year's annual Pack 50 Pinewood derby took place on Sunday, Feb 17th. Our racers all had great homemade cars ready to race!
Each year, Pack 50 gives the scouts Pinewood Derby kits at our annual party in mid-December, and they have several weeks to work on designing and constructing the cars for the upcoming race in late January / early February. This gives them the opportunity spend quality time with their parents / guardians planning a design and building the car with simple tools. On race day, each scout registers their car with our race officials and has it officially weighed. If any adjustments are necessary, we have a pit crew standing by with extra weight and graphite to ensure that each scout can prepare their car for our day at the races!
During the event, concessions are available and prizes are raffled off between heats. The scouts' cars are also judged for creativity and originality for additional prizes! Finally, once all of the racing is done, scouts in each den given awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers, as well as overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies!
